Description: The coach has three defensive backs at a time assume defensive positions, double-arm distance apart, facing him. On the coach's command, "Go," the players start to back-pedal. The coach then commands either, "Left," "Right," "Back," ''45-Right," or "Straight Ahead". After hearing the command, the players immediately twist out of back-pedaling, begin sprinting in the direction of the command given, and then accelerate for about five yards. The three players then recover, while the next three players assume defensive positions to start the drill.

The coach can add variety to this drill by throwing the football either over the player's head or below the player's waist, thereby, requiring the defender to play the ball at unusual angles. Page 50 Drill 38: Break to the Ball Objective: To enhance the ability of a defensive back to react to the ball; to develop hand and eye coordination; to practice moving to the football. Equipment Needed: A football. Description: The drill involves having the defensive backs form one line about 20 yards from the coach, facing him.

After the players back-pedal for about ten yards, the coach should throw the football in the direction of one of the players. All four players should then react to the ball, trying to catch (intercept) the football. Players should maintain their proper alignment, keeping their eyes on the coachready to react to the ball. The drill should then be repeated with the next four defensive players. When the coach throws the football, players should be required to react to the ball quickly as though they were trying to intercept the pass.
