Color your drawings. Life Moves to Land For over three billion years life was found only in water. Because all living things need water, plants and animals faced big problems in adapting to life on land. They needed some way to take up and hold water. They also had to have some kind of structure to prevent their bodies from collapsing without the support of water around them. The first living things on land were plants that probably evolved from green algae. Early plants such as Psilophyton and Rhynia developed simple short stems (a few inches high) for support.

Ammonoids were relatives of squids and octopuses, but they lived in large, coiled shells. The shells had walls, called septa, that divided the shells into sections. These gas-filled chambers helped the ammonoids to float. Because ammonoids were very common in all the seas around the world and because they had so many different shapes, they are useful as index fossils. These are fossils that scientists use to identify and date the rocks in which they are found. For example, assume a paleontologist knows that a certain ammonoid species lived 150 million years ago.

Creatures may face ice and snow each day, or sun and sand. Fish swim in fresh or salt water. Plants live in shady, moist valleys or on windy, open clifftops. Each species has special structures or ways of behaving that help it survive. These special features are called adaptations. Let’s chart the diversity of a few categories of life.
