Both have been collected in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Angola, and Tanzania. Years ago there was a vine of Vanilla imperialis that threatened to fill the entire orchid house at Kew Gardens in England. A vine of the same species snakes its way through the orchid conservatory in Copenhagen, Denmark. The plant is supported by wires throughout the greenhouse and flowers every year. Mature fruits split open to reveal a white, foamy, but odorless substance within which the black seeds are embedded. The function of this material and mechanism of fruit and seed dispersal are unknown.

Pittieri are generally considered to be distinct species by most botanists, in 2010 the late Miguel Soto Arena reported these to be two of three subspecies of this species: V. pompona subsp. pompona (native to Mexico), V. pompona subsp. grandiflora (widespread in South America), and V. pompona subsp. pittieri (widespread in Costa Rica, Honduras, and other parts of Central America). Further research of wild-collected material is needed to untangle whether any of these subspecies should be elevated to the rank of species, as they historically have been classified, or whether they may be hybrids (plate 58).

The flowers of V. clavi culata are usually white throughout, and those of V. dilloniana are mostly red throughout the labellum. In The Native Orchids of Florida, Carlyle Luer noted that the lower portion of the vines often die, leaving the remainder of the vine to scramble as an epiphyte throughout the surrounding vegetation. Where exposed to sunshine, Vanilla barbellata vines take on a bronze-orange color, but only flower when they reach the full sun of the canopy. According to Luer, flowering occurs in June, with each blossom opening at night and closing by midday.
